Irish Beer & Kosher Kookies?

Irish Beer & Kosher Kookies?

Guess what corresponds with St. Patrick’s Day this Thursday?

Yes, the joyous Jewish festival of Purim.

Says Stephanie Butnick, Deputy editor, Tablet Magazine and host of podcast Unorthodox:

“They tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat a delicious cookie.”

Hamentashen!

Hamantashen are triangle-shaped cookies that resemble the three-cornered hat worn by Haman, the villain of Purim. Traditional hamantashen are made from basic sugar cookie dough and have fillings like poppyseed, apricot, strawberry, or chocolate.

Growing up, Purim was a fun occasion compared to the solemnity of other Jewish holidays. My brothers and I loved dressing up for the Purim Carnival at our Temple. I remember my older brother receiving an award for his costume of benevolent Mordecai, Esther’s guardian and cousin. Mike walked across the stage with his ridiculous paper mustache glued to his upper lip. I was so proud of him.

Here’s to you, dear brother.
