. . . meaning God and my right, is the motto of the monarch of the United Kingdom outside Scotland, since being adopted by Henry V (1386–1422). It appears on a scroll beneath the shield of the coat of arms of the United Kingdom, stylized above. The motto is said to have been used by Richard I first (1157–1199) as a battle cry when he defeated France. Dieu et mon droit is also presumed to be a reference to Richard’s French ancestry and the concept of the divine right of the monarch to govern: The belief in medieval Europe was not that victory automatically went to the side with the better army but to the side that God viewed with favor.
