Scientists achieve nuclear fusion breakthrough with blast of 192 lasers -NYT Kenneth Chang. Dec. 13, 2022.

I am the last person on earth (get it?) I thought would ever comment on ‘fusion.’
“Fusion is the same reaction that powers the sun and the stars” Tammy Ma, Director, National Ignition Facility (NIF).

The largest laser ever built is housed in a massive room the size of a large football stadium and 1,000 more times more powerful than the entire US electrical grid.

Theoretically provides a nearly limitless source of clean and safe energy, possibly solving the world’s food and water problems.
“Completely clean. no carbon anywhere in the equation, no nuclear waste,” Ta states.
“Humans are amazing, aren’t we?” smiles Ta.
Fusion is a process that merges atoms together, releasing energy.

But fusion is hard. After 60 years of research, they scientists had their breakthrough. Humans had unlocked that power of the stars.
“We have finally put the ‘I’ in NIF,” Ta agrees, laughing.

I ask: Will ‘the powers that be’ stand for this?”
I don’t see it.
